Tracking My Sleep With An App

Tracking my sleep has been a revelation and to say I am obsessed with sleep is an understatement.

It’s kind of crazy but we spend nearly a third of our lives asleep. At least we want to.

Sleeping 8 hours a night is ideal no matter how old we get. I usually get somewhere between 6 & 7 hours a night.

Unfortunately, sleep and chronic pain are unhappy bedfellows. They simply don’t get along.

We need sleep to facilitate healing but pain chronic pain often keeps us from sleeping. This conundrum can be a major problem.

And even though I am not in pain at the moment I am still interested in sleeping well.

And information is everything.

So I decided to start tracking my sleep.

Sleepcycle is a free app (it has a premium service but I haven’t seen the need for it) and I am sure there are others but this is the one I use.

To start using it I had to break one of my cardinal rules of keeping my phone out of my room at night but the compromise is I only use it to turn the app on and off.

Sleep is important for so many reasons and if it is something you have issues with, sleep quality is definitely something you want to work on.

When we sleep, something amazing happens in the brain. Our neurons will go quiet. A few seconds later, blood will flow out of the head. Then, cerebrospinal fluid flows in, washing through the brain in rhythmic, pulsing waves.

That’s good stuff and we want to encourage more of it.

I have learned a few significant things from tracking my sleep.

  • I sleep significantly better if I go to sleep before 11 pm.
  • I get better sleep on one side.
  • If I can go back to sleep instead of getting up when my eyes first open I get some of the deepest sleep of my night.

So if you are up for it, download the app, and let’s find out how you are sleeping.
